The landscape, once the remains of several abandoned quarries, has been transformed into a veritable sanctuary for living examples of the beautiful and threatened temperate flora of East Asia. I was especially inspired by the sound of the falls and water running through the steep hillsides.

These paintings of ponds and waterfalls surrounded by rare and endangered species from China and Japan were done at a spot that's just a 40-minute drive from my studio.

The place is QuarryHill Botanical Garden -- a conservatory of Asian plantings brought here over a period of twenty annual expeditions to form one of the largest collections of wild-source Asian plants in North America and Europe.
